This year, Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, ends on Dec. 24. This Jewish observance includes lighting a menorah for eight days to commemorate the survival of Judaism.
On Dec. 25, Christmas Day involves special church services and masses to celebrate the birth of Christ and the story of the Nativity. This holiday is combined with many secular winter celebrations, like decorating evergreen bushes and trees to symbolize everlasting light around the winter solstice.
Kwanzaa, a weeklong holiday from Dec. 26-Jan. 1, honors African culture, including the ceremonial colors of red, green and black. First celebrated in 1966, Kwanzaa includes music performances, ending with a feast and gifts.
On Dec. 26, Boxing Day is observed in Europe, Canada, Jamaica, Australia and parts of Asia. Boxing Day started as the day servants would receive a “Christmas box” from their bosses, filled with food, money bonuses and gifts. Now it is known as a day to give back to those in need. It is also a shopping day with large discounts, much like the American “Black Friday” following Thanksgiving Day.
