In 1805 one of Britain’s most revered military heroes, Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, was fatally shot at sea during the Napoleonic Wars. The crew wanted to give Admiral Nelson a proper burial in England so they placed his body in a cask of rum to preserve it for the remainder of the trip. When the crew returned to England and removed Nelson’s body from the cask they noticed that nearly all the rum was gone. Historians assume that the crew drank from the cask, even after Nelson’s body was placed in it. Now we like rum, but not that much. We would much rather enjoy it in one of Wicked Jack’s rum cakes.
