What are Duppies: malevolent and restless spirits that like to haunt the living. Unlike the good spirits that are usually believed to be dead family members who take an interest in their living family, the unhappy, restless duppies are known to do harm to the living in exchange for payment of food or drink, especially rum.
To appease the spirits and to ensure the safety of all, libations of rum is poured onto the cotton trees where the spirits live. If you ever encounter a cotton tree that needs chopping, consider offering up some Wicked Jack’s rum cake first!
